Preliminary Remarks

The Curriculum Implantology has been developed in a cooperation of the bodies and expert speakers of DGZI and the participating universities. A post-graduate education course in implantology, the Curriculum Implantology is being offered as a basic training program through a collaboration universities  as well as experienced  Cooperative concepts were harmonized in a consensus conference ( between DGZI, DGI, MKG ‑ Chirurgie, Oralchirurgie, BdiZ ) and incorporated into this series of implantology seminars. The curriculum offered by DGZI consists of 8 weekend sessions plus internship and supervision distributed over one year. The curriculum is aimed at dentists seeking sound continued dental education with great relevance to their daily work. The program focuses not only on theoretical aspects, but also places a major emphasis on implantology technique that is relevant for the daily practice. A special focus was placed on paving the participants’ way to the practical application of the technique by means of exercises and live demonstrations.  Participants will be given opportunity to practice their skills on specimens. As a special bonus exercises on superstructures as well as the recent subspecialties of augmentation, red and white implant aesthetics have also been integrated into the program.

Each participant in the course must score 180 points in the curriculum to receive the certificate (8 weekend sessions of 20 points each + 20 points for internship / supervision = 160 + 20 points = 180 points or CE units). Two internships (2x5 points) and one supervision (10 points). (10 points) are scheduled not earlier than after weekend session 5. The internships should cover both surgical and prosthetic topics. During the supervision, the participant performs an implantation surgery in one of his or her patients under the supervision of an experienced tutor. Teamwork and evaluation based on oral or written examination of the achievement of the educational objective are part of each day of all curriculum sessions. Each weekend is concluded with a short  examination .

There is final examination at the conclusion of the curriculum. Participants who successfully complete the 8 weekend sessions, examinations and obtain a minimum of 20 additional points through internships / supervision may submit their documentation to the organization committee of DGZI. Internships and Supervision

The internships as part of the curriculum provide the participants with an opportunity to observe the activities of an experienced implantologist on a one-to-one basis and from close-by. The presence of the participant should not significantly interfere with the normal routine in the dentist’s practice. Breaks between treatments will provide ample time for discussions and there may even be an opportunity for the participant to assist the tutoring implantologist.

Similar to university education, the supervision as part of DGZI’s postgraduate education in implantology provides the participants with an opportunity to gain practical experience with real patients. The participant and the tutoring implantologist will discuss the design of the preparatory steps and surgery several weeks ahead of time. Following this, the participant performs an implant surgery on one of his or her own patients at the premises of and assisted by the tutoring implantologist. This ensures the safety and prevents stress during the first own steps in the field of implantology.

Additional rules for internships and supervisions:

  • The scope or number of internships and/or supervisions may exceed the minimal requirements (see below), suiting the individual needs of the participant.

  • Internships and/or supervisions will be agreed directly by the participant and tutoring implantologist.

  • Each participant must be able to evidence a minimum of 20 continued education points from internships and/or supervisions completed (ALL THE STEPS), The tutors will issue to the participating colleague a certificate for all continued education points earned.

  • The number of individuals participating in each internship / supervision is limited to three.

Usually, supervisions are held at the tutor’s premises; participants are not entitled to demand that the supervision be held at their own premises, though this may be agreed upon mutual consent.

The legal relationship existing between the participant in the seminar and his or her patient is maintained during the supervision. The participant is responsible for instructing the patient with regard to the details of the supervision.
